Ogawa-ya

A rare find in Tokyo, Ogawa-ya brings Satsuma Sendai's local specialty, shinko dango, to the capital in an unpretentious neighborhood setting. Quite different from standard mochi confections, these skewers are crafted from rice flour rather than glutinous rice, giving them a firm, satisfying chew and a clean bite that lets the rustic aroma of steamed rice emerge with every mouthful.

The counter features an approachable lineup of traditional flavorings, including soy sauce, sweet-savory mitarashi glaze, roasted seaweed, and red bean paste. The plain soy seasoning reflects Kagoshima's regional touch—mellow and gently sweet rather than sharply salty. The mitarashi version strikes a graceful balance of sweetness and savoriness light enough to eat several skewers in one sitting, while those who prefer a dessert note can opt for coarse red bean paste, whose visible whole beans offer a hearty, comforting texture.
